Austria Builds Marketing Roads Without Money
Completion of this year's 240 miles of country roads will open a network of 300 miles of roadway to Austrian farmers living in the mountains or out-of-the-way places. Formerly, for lack of communication,
many have been practically cut on from traffic and markets, but those new roads, although not proper highways, enable them to bring their produce tu market speedily and cheaply.
The construction has not cost then, any ready money. It has been dune almost entirely by the VHuntary Labour ,Service and hnanced through the Broductivo Employment Fund. The farmers’ part in this co-operative undertaking has been to furnish food for Lhe workers in tho form of seif-produced dairy aud other .provisions, to supply such building material as rubble, storks, pebbles, sand, and to lend them their c.r'ts and horses.
This method has so far proved the cheapest for constructing by-roads in lluniy populated, remote rural districts, where local corporations cannot alford heavy expenditure.
