REPOET ON YESTERDAY’S . ACTIVITY. Tho report of the chairman-(Mr A. W. Just) of the Palmerston North Horticultural. Society for the .year,, ending December ill, 1935, reads: I have pleasure in again reporting a satisfactory year (despite many drawbacks). The membership is 240. In an endeavour, to increase the attendance at the shows, il .was decided to • reduco the price of at. mission to the daffodil and rose show This was successful, as was evinced by the salo of tickets by members of the committee. ’ With'the active co-opera-tion of the members the coming year should show still better attendan. Many people had never been at a horticultural show, and expressed their a. predation of the beautiful displays. As so often happens, show dates did not suit all exhibitors, but notwithstanding, ontries at each show were good, and the quality of the exhibits was well up to standard. The decorative section (adult and junior) at somo of the shows was outstanding. The fact that many exhibitors come from a distance is evidence that tho shows are increasing- in popularity. There are also many local exhibitors, and tho committeo is looking forward to an increase in these, as many growers have expressed their intention of entering. Much pleasure and profit can be obtained from friendly intercourse with other exhibitors. The. committee would express its hearty appreciation of tho assistance given by those who generously donate cash prizes, trophies, and value. These help to make an attractive schedule, though tho winning of trophies is not the only goal. Those who exhibit flowers, etc. (many of new introduction) give pleasure to many who would not otherwise see the different varieties of flowers. The society is indebted to those ladies and gentlemen who so generously givo their services as judges at the various shows. A sub-committee was set up during the year to revise the

rules. Its report will bo placed before you for consideration and confirmation. Great credit is due to those members of the committee who, at each show, give so willingly of their timo and labour in setting up and dismantling the .benches. Many do not realise tho work -entailed, and in addition , thore is the unpacking and packing of vases. Mention also skoulu be made of the hand of ladies who have, at each show, at tended to tho luncheon and afternoon tea. To Messrs A. J. and S. Shailor the committee is indebted for planning tl: layout at each show. Tho society staged an exhibit at the Winter ’Show (Palmerston North) and many complimentary remarks were passed on tho excellent display.

During the year new material was obtained and vases and timber. The committee would express its thanks to Mr W. Devine, for storago of material; Mr E. Grant Sim (lion, auditor); the Press for publicity, and all others who gave their help and services.
