Gallichan Accepts Invitation

WILL PLAY FOR WELLINGTON IN PLUNKET SHIELD GAME

N. Gallichan has accepted the invitation of tho Wellington Cricket Association to join tho team, in the Plunket Shield match versus Otago, to bo played at Dunedin on Jdnuary 24, 25, 27 and 28. As Gallichan will leave Palmerston North for the south on January 21, he will not be available to play for Manawatu against the M.C.C. on January 22 and 23. Gallichan will carry with him the best wishes of supporters in the Manawatu. Not only is his selection a tribute to his personal cricketing capacities, proved through many seasons, but it is a timely recognition oi the rights of country players to opportunities in major matches. This being so, none wHI reproach Gallichan for his decision to go to Dunedin, even though it will mean

his absence during the M.C.C. game. To have declined the invitation might have been to pre-

judice the case of other country

players on future occasions when

the selectors were busy.

Gallichan has a fine cricketing record, and has twice represented New Zealand against English visitors. Many consider his omission from the last New Zealand team to visit Englaud was a serious error.

It is still uncertain jf Moloney will enjoy the necessary lcavo to play la tho same match, although he is definitely not playing in the gamo to-day against Southland, as he is already in Dunedin.

Southerners Arrive in City Tho Southland representatives reached Palmerston North just after midday yesterday, and wore met at the station by Air A. M. Ongley (chairman of the management committee of tho Manawatu association), Mr 11. A. Brace (secretary), Mr W. E. Norris (captain of the Manawatu team), Messrs J. 11. H.ardio and E. Weir (members of the management commatec) , and others. The southerners experienced a very rough crossing of Cook Strait last night, and even the most seasoned travellers found the choppy sea a iitcle too much for them, only one member escaping discomfiture. They were not feeling quite themselves on arrival, but arrangements were immediately made for a practice during the afternoon to enable the players to recover. There are 12 members in the party. Fulfilling tho duties of ' caplaiu-man-ftger is Mr W. R. Patrick, the former New Zealand representative, while tho other travellers arc Messrs Uttley, l-lawke, Pickard, Brittcndcn, McGowan, Spence, Anderson, Poole, Purdue, Btcw and Carswell. Of the side which met Manawatu last March eight arc again included, the absentees being AlcOoll, Scandrctt and Hallumore. The last-named, who was transferred to Palmerston North almost immediately following the game, will bo opposing his old team mates to-day. Of the Manawatu eleven which defended the trophy last season, only seven are again included, R. J. Hatch, K. Hatch, Olliver and Monteith being absentees. LI. J. Hatch is now resident in Melbourne, while Aloutcith is in Auckland.

Last night tho southerners, after their acute disappointment last year, were casting a particularly anxious eye to the weather, which was not full of bright promise.
