Reeve-Nicol Fight Definitely

LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE WILL BE AT STAKE.

It was reported yesterday morning that there had been a hitch in the arrangements for 1 the Ray Nieol-Haroid Reeve bout, which is to be staged in Pahiatua by the Pahiatua Boxing Club on Saturday week. Word was received from Mr J. A. Walsh, secretary of the Pahiatua Boxing Club, yesterday afternoon, however, that all differences had been settled and that the contest, with tho light-heavyweight title at stake, would take place on Saturday week, as announced.

It was stated that Nicol had thrown a spanner into tho works with a demand for a £SO guarantee, plus £lO expenses, but yesterday Mr Walsh received word from Nicol that he would light for a £SO purse divided bn a 60-40 basis, with £lO for expenses. As mentioned above, the fight is to be for tho light-heavyweight title, at present held by Nicol, and it is arousing extraordinary interest in the Bush and adjoining districts. ■ According to Mr Walsh, the supporting bouts are going to be much above the average and several of them will rank as star bouts. An effort is being liiade to get Jones, the crack middleweight from Miramar, to oppose tho hard-hitting Pahiatua amateur, Maurice Spring. In addition, Bert O’Keefe has written the Pahiatua Boxing Club stating that Jim Johnson (11.8), Charlie Foster (11-0), Joo Collins (8.6), Ron Ward (11.0), N. Christensen (9.5), and A. Keith (9.5) arc available if required. An effort is also being made to match Gordon, the brilliant Auckland featherweight, so that Saturday week should provide a feast of fighting for tho fans.

Break Prom Manawatu, At a meeting of tho Pahiatua Boxing Club executive yesterday, after duly considering all points, it was decided ,t.o break away from tho control of tho Manawatu Boxing Association and form a controlling body of their own, to bo lmowu as tho Pahiatua Boxing Association. Tho local aethorities are quite justified in coming to this decision, it. was reported, as they had put on some of tho finest tournaments in the island, both professional and amateur. There was no doubt that Pahiatua was fast becoming the cradle of the fistic art in the Wairarapa. In connection with the .Spring-J ones light, a Pahiatua sportsman has donated a £5 5s trophy for tho bout, which will be of 6 two-minute rounds. At tho meeting it was announced that 25 sportsmen had guaranteed £1 each for the big fight.
