HON. J. G. COBBE’S CAMPAIGN Meetings were held on Wednesday by Hon. J. G. Cobbe at Umutoi in the afternoon and at Awahou North and Raumai in the evening. At all meetings Mr Cobbe, who was.warmly received, spoke of tho accomplishments of the Government during the anxious years of tho depression and outlined its programme for the future, which he declared to be one reflecting enterprise as well as stability in administration. MR E. FAIR’S CAMPAIGN On Wednesday evening Mr E. Fair, addressing a largo meeting of electors at Ohingaiti, outlined tho general policy and proposals of tho Democrat party, Mr Wrigktson being in tho chair. Replying to a question, Mr Fair specially stressed his party’s intention to help definitely to brighten the outlook of the young men of tho country. The Democrat proposal's to abate unemployment wero definite and progressive, and designed to banish starvation and misery. They also planned to help the young farmers- —those farmers’ sons and others with proved industry and ability to farm —to obtain land and settle it permanently and comfortably. Mr Fair also referred to the chaos of tho present system 'of education, with its numerous overlapping controlling bodies, its various arid vaguo scales of salaries, and its unreasonable economies, such ( ns the exclusion of five-year-olds and rationing of teachers. The- full edu- ( cation vote should be restored and tho whole system overhauled and investigated and a more modern equitable .system devised. M.'r Fair quoted reports of the Auditor-General in support of his criticism and disapproval of the present Government’s manipulation of the public accounts. At the conclusion of his address a hearty voto of thanks to Mr Fair for his address was proposed by Mr ton and seconded by Mr Stent. A voto of thanks to the chair concluded I the meeting.
