Kiwitea School
A DAY WITH LIVESTOCK. A largo number of parents aud residents attended the annual calf judging competition held at the Kiwitea School on Wednesday afternoon. The competition this year created greater interest and enthusiasm than in any previous year, this being largely duo to the interest taken in tho competition for the teachers’ trophy. The entries comprised of nine claves, four yearlings and ouc two-year-old. The judge (Mr. .J. M. Smith, Bunnythorpe) congratulated tire children on the very even line of calves brought forward. He found very little difference in tho calves, although tho calf he placed first in dairy typo was an outstanding animal. Mr. Smith explained his placings, which were as follows: —
Dairy type: Jessie Nash’s Rosolla 1, Perry Taylor’s Peggy 2, Judith Clapliam’s Lucy 3, Peter Claphain’s Joan v.h.c., Kathleen Williams’ Annette h.c. Care in rearing: Kathleen Williams’ Annette 1, Jessie Nash’s Eosella 2, Peter Clapham’s Joan 3, Perry Taylor’s Peggy v.h.c., Judith Clapham’s Lucy h.c. Yearlings: Peter Batchelar’s Marina 1, Eric Batchelar’s Betty 2, Joe Anderson’s Melba 3, Gordon Craine’s Tinkerbell v.h.c.
Two-year-old: Joe Anderson’s Tange rine 1.
The judging was followed by a talk by Mr. A. Banks, who used a beast provided by Mr. D. Kilgour to illustrate his points. Mr. Banks guve a very able and clear explanation of the qualities which a good milking beast should possess. Using three sheep from the flock of Mr. W. H. Gibson for illustration purposes, Mr. Ileury Eutherford gave a very inteesting talk on the breeding of Romney sheep. Mr. Rutherford’s remarks were followed with great interest not only by the children, but also by tho menfolk present. A pedigree •Southdown lamb, the property of Mr. Anderson, was used to indicate the typo of sheep required for the fat lamb trade.
These proceedings were followed by afternoon tea in tho school, during which Mr. Lange (agriculture instructor) congratulated tho children on the excellent entries and thanked tho judge for his services and tho demonstrators for their excellent talks. He also spoko very highly of the services of the ladies in providing refreshments. Mr. Kidd then presented tho award cards and made the following additional presentations:— Champion calf (Mr. Joblin’s trophy): Jessie Nash’s Eosella, 9 points, 1; (Mr. W. Taylor’s trophies), Kathleen Williams’ Annette and Perry Taylor’s Peggy, 6 points, equal, 2. Mangold competition (prizes donated by Mr. Kidd): John Williams 1, Eric Batehelar 2, Bee Salmon 3. Mr. W. H. Gibson, chairman of the school committee, extended thanks, to all those who had assisted in making tho afternoon Such a successful one. He particularly extended his thanks to tho teacher, Mr. L. H. Joblin, for his enthusiasm in promoting such interest in the competition among the children, and for arranging such an interesting and instructive aftornoon.
