QUEEN’S TREASURES

A glowing tribute to Queen Mary as an art connoisseur has been made in London by Mr James Duveen, the art dealer.

It is, Mr Duveen declares, entirely due to the activities and artistic appreciation of Queen Mary that British Royal Palaces are now “treasure jfcroves of art.”

“Queen Mary has accomplished what none of her predecessors could attain. After years of patient study she has so thoroughly rearranged the royal collections that to-day the Royal Palaces and the works of art they hold look more beautiful than any palaces which I have seen during many travels,” Mr Duveen writes in a book

published in London recently—“ Collections,” by James Henry Duveen. “The Queen,” he adds, “has succeeded in that most difficult task, the creation of fine interiors so that every piece they contain comes to its own.” Mr Duveen declares that when King Edward Vll succeeded to the throne nothing had been done to British Iloyal art collections for many years. King Edward began a treasure hunt, and discoveries of immense value were found in “all sorts of forgotten corners.” “But,” Mr Duveen says, “the proper disposal of the pictures had to wait for the care and study which Queen Mary has devoted to them for many years.”
