American Pedigree Cattle

Commenting on the standard of the beef cattle breeds in America, Mr Robertson said his opinion was that their best cattle were practically on a par with the best in other countries, but the quality in a great many herds was only mediocre. There were thousands of herds of pedigree cattle which were only of average run quality. The American farmer was, however, a wonderful iceder. All of his fat stock was made prime beef ou corn. Pigs were similarly fed. The farmer sent his grain crop, which xvas principally corn (maize) to market on. the hoof. America was a nation of feeds rather than breeders. There was certainly a percentage of high-class breeders but in the main the Amiiiean stock-breeder was a multiplier and not a skilful breeder.
