District Nursing Matters

HOSPITAL BOARD’S plans District nursing matters occupied the attention of the Palmerston North Hospital Board for some time at its monthly meeting yesterday. To provide central accommodation for the Palmerston North nurse, the board decided to rent a vacant shop in the library building for a period of live years. Tho board also entered into a lease of rooms in Peilding for a period of live years.

The managing-secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) reported that the following district nurses had taken up their duties since the last meeting of tho board: Sister E. M. Small at Poston, Sister Brown at Peilding, and Sister Cooper (previously temporary) at Ota id. In regard to tho proposed district nurse at Kimbolton, the chairman (Mr J. K. Hornblow) stated that a deputation had waited on tho executive that morning and had urged that the nurse be stationed at Apiti. After discussion, the board decided not to alter its plans. Temporary arrangements were made for her accommodation. '

Iu regard to activities at Shannon it was reported that the chairman and the managing-secretary had met the Shannon District Nursing Committee on October 4. The chairman explained the alteration in the district nursing service which, tho board hud recently decided upon and sought the co-operation of tho committee in forming a district auxiliary in Shannon. After discussion, Mr. Hyde, on behalf of the committee, assured the chairman that the District Nursing Committee would carry on as an auxiliary to do what members could to assist the nurse aud generally to assist the hospital. He explained that the committee had managed to discharge all its liabilities up to June 30 and had at the moment £2O available towards the purchase of the section for tlie proposed nurse’s consulting rooms and cottage. The chairman explained that tho board had provided moneys on tho current year’s estimates for the erection of the cottage on the understanding that the section would be provided by the residents of Shannon. On behalf of the committee, members undertook to ensure that the section which was pointed out to the chairman and tho managing-secretary would be purchased at an early date, and handed over to tho Hospital Board so that the erection of the cottage might proceed. In regard to cars for tho district nurses, the managing-secretary reported that the amount provided on the estimates was £4OO. This had been spent as follows: —Otaki District Nurse’s car, £72; Palmerston North and Peilding District Nurses’cars (2), £297 14s, leaving a balance of £3O 6s. It was still necessary to have a car for the nurse at Foxton and a car for the nurse at Kimbolton. ue suggested that a.new car be .acquired for Otaki and tho car that the Otaki nurse is at present using bo used by the Kimbolton nurse, and that a new car be acquired for the Poxton nurse. He thought that, if the matter was placed before the department, arrangements could lie made to buy these cars and pay for them at the beginning of the next financial year. This would mean holding over approxi-

mately £3BO to be provided on next year’s estimates.—The managing-secre-tary was given authority to deal rvith the matter.
