Women Deputation to Minister of Health
REGARDING PREVALENCE OP GOITRE A deputation consisting of the members of the Parliamentary Watch Committee of tho Dominion National Council of Women waited upon the Minister of Health (tho Hon. Sir Alexander Young) on Thursday and handed him a resolution passed at tho recent conference of tho N.C.W. in Dunedin regarding the prevalence o.f goitre in New Zealand, specially among young people, and asking that tho sum oi: £SOO per year for a few years bo sot aside for special study of tho causes in New Zealand.
Miss Ivirk (president of tho Dominion N.C.W.) briefly set forth the reasons which had mado the Council anxious ou this subject. She mentioned one particular part of the Dominion where tho highest incidence is recorded, and remarked that the soil there had a high'' iodine content, and therefore tho idea that deficient iodine was one of the causes of the trouble appeared to bo mistaken. The Minister explained that a great deal of research had already been done, and a number of interesting facts recorded, specially in regard to soil and water supply. He was interested in the matter, and would do all' he could to have some further work done. Tho deputation thanked the Minister and also Mr. E. A. Wright, M.P. who had introduced them.
