Women’s Christian Temperance Union

The annual convention of the Women's Christian Tompcranco Union (ALanawatu district) was held at Levin on Thursday. Mrs. Paterson, of Pahiatuu, the district president, was in the chair. Delegates were present from Pox-ton, Otaki, Palmerston North, Finlding, Pahiatua and Levin. Mrs. Paterson opened the convention with prayer, and a reading from John, 21. The following appointments w r cre made: —Mistress of Courtesies, Mrs. P. G. Thomson; letter-writer and reporter, Mrs. L. W. Bolt. Exports from the unions represented were read by the delegates, and these .showed that each union had had a busy your. Mrs. Paterson also road a report from Miss M. McLav, Dominion organiser of the W.C.T.U., of the various meetings held by Miss McLay, in the Manawatu district. It was felt that Miss McLay had left each union the desire t 6 work more keenly iu temperance aims.

Ono delegate stated that the union should interest the Bible class leaders ia the temperance question, and Mrs. Paterson said that tho best way ot doing this was by distributing literature. It was decided to have ono special collection in the year for hospital visitations, especially for the Palmerston North Hospital, where there were often many patients, both young and old, who seldom had visitors and a visit from a W.C.T.U. visitor was much appreciated. Miss Moore, of Palmerston North, young people’s superintendent, gave a report on the union's work regarding the Cradle Koil, Baud of Hope and the “Y” department. These reports showed that each muon had a large number of babies on tho roll, and work among the young people was being carried on extensively, although, as Miss Moore pointed out, there was a big gap between the Band ot Hope and the Alliance, and the young men were not being catered for in this direction.

Mrs. Kennerley led iu the noontido devotions v The afternoon session also oponed with devotions, these being taken by Mrs. Ritchie, of Palmerston North. Mrs. Ritchie also gave a report on scientific facts.

.Mrs. Terry, of Podding, gave a vivid talk, showing that with. Clod all things are possible. Miss Lee spoke on the work among the Maoris. (Several remits were placed before the meeting and these are to be referred to the Dominion convention.

District officers were all reappointed, these being: President, Mrs. Paterson; vice-president, Miss Moore; secretary, Mrs. Young; treasurer, Mrs. KcnnerleyDistrict superintendents were also reappointed, these being: Young People’s superintendent, Miss Aloore; school of methods, Airs. Terry; Alaori department, Aliss Lee. A kind invitation to hold the next annual convention at Palmerston North was accepted with thanks.

.Miss Grant (Otaki) sang a solo, and Mrs. Mew (Levin) sang a convention song.
