Eliminating Level Crossings

Porirua, Paraparaunw and Longburn Included FIRST INSTALMENT ' ANNOUNCED Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. The first iustalinent of 21 level crossings, have been selected for elimination by the -Muiu Highways Board. Unemployment Board and Railway Board, according to an announcement made to-day by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. M. L.tcdiencr. ! He said taut as soon as the first instalment of the programme was in hand a further selection would bo made in oruer that preliminary work for the whole work can bo completed. The work would be put in hand almost immediately. As already announced, it> is proposed to spend £120,000 per anum for the next three years on this scheme. The t ossings t bo dealt with in the first instalment arc:— Whaugarei district: Two crossings south of llikurangi, which it is proposed to' eliminate by deviating the highway; Hoteo crossing, for which an overbridge is proposed. Auckland district: Tirau crossing, To Kauwhata crossing, Huapai crossing (north Auckland), Hopohopu crossing (near Taupiri), for which overbridges arc proposed and Waihi, where a deviation will be made. Tauranga distriel: Tura-kc-uga cross (near Rotorua), where a subway i- ""idered the best solution.

Napier district: Maharahara crossings (South D'anevirke). There are two crossings elasc together at this point and the highway deviation, will eliminate ucm for all traffic except an inconsiderable amount of local traffic; Waitangi crossings (South Napier). The relocation of the new Waitangi washout bridge at present in hand will eliminate these crossings. Taumarunui district: Oio crossing (South Taumarunui) and Piriaka crossing (South Taumarunui) for which ovcrbridgecs arc proposed. 'Stratford district: Normanby crossing, for which an overbridge is proposed; Ngaerc crossing for which cither a subway or overbridge is proposed. Wanganui district: Kai Iwi crossing (North Wanganui) for which an overbridge is proposed. Wellington district: Porirua crossing and Longburn . crossing, for which overbridges are proposed; Paraparaumu crossing, for which cither an overbridge or subway is proposed. Urcymouth district: Brunner crossing (North Greymoutli), for which an overbridge is proposed. Christchurch district: Styx crossing (North Christchurch) and Sockburn crossing (South Christchurch), for which overbridges aij proposed. Dunedin district: Kartigi crossing and Palmerston crossing, for which overbridges are proposed. Deborah crossing for which a subway i.i proposed. Invercargill district.
