Doctor Arrested in Auckland

SERIOUS CHARGE FOLLOWS MID NIGHT SEARCHES

YOUNG WOMAN" IN HOSPITAL

AUCKLAND, Last Night

George Frederick Hewer, an unregistered medical practitioner, lias been arrested and is at present at inmate of Mount Eden prison on remand. On Tuesday night Detective-Sergeant J. Waish and Detectives H. C. Murch, A. G. McWhirtor and W. Slater executed search warrants at the home of the accused, known as “Dr. Ilewer,” in Bella Vista road, Memo Bay, and at his rooms in City Chambers, and after prolonged searches at both places he was taken into custody.

A motor-car conveying the four detective officers drew up at the house about 11.30 on Tuesday night. At the time tho detectives called, Dr. Hewer was in bed. Hurriedly dressing, lie admitted tho callers, who proceeded systematically to search his house. A writing desk was given particular attention and much correspondence was seized.

Dr, Hewer later accompanied the detectives to his rooms in City Chambers, where a further exhaustive search was carried out. At 1.50 yesterday morning he was officially arrested and charged that, on July 23, he unlawfully used an instrument or other means on a female.

Hewer appeared in tho Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr W. R. McKean, S.M. He was described on the charge sheet as a medical practitioner, aged 49.

Senior" Detective Hall, applying for a remand until July 31, said: “Owing to this charge being a serious one, coupled with the fact that the sentence for such an offence can be imprisonment for life, and also that tho young woman is at present in hospital, 1 strongly oppose bail.” Without comment the magistrate refused bail.
