From Our Own Correspondent. The results of last week’s play In the ~ Te Kawau ladies’ basketball competition « Were as follow: . A grade: liopane defeated Rongotea, 12—4; Kosina defeated Kangiotu,22s; * Sanson drew with Oroua Downs, 8 all. * B grade: ICopa'no defeated Rongoten. - 3 —2; Glen Oroua defeated Sanson, 4—3 Rangiotu defeated Oroua Downs, 20 —11 * School Committee.

At a meeting of the Rongotea schoo. committee held on Monday evening there were present Messrs W. Amies (chairman), E. A. Croad (secretary), J. Duke and B. Kenrlck (headmaster). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs IV. Matheson and A. Hill. Correspondence ' was read from the Wanganui Education Board regarding the proposed plant- - lng of trees on highways and asking that the centre co-'opefato with local bodies whore possible and also to plant one or more trees to commemorate the silver jubilee. Plans for the observance of Arbor Day will be formulated at a future meeting. The headmaster’s report was as follows: "I commenced duties at your school on the Ist inst. as relieving headteacher, -taking over from Mr Nodwell. I found all records and grounds in good order.- The school roll now stands at 77 pupils of whom 41 are boys and 30 girls. The school has suffered two withdrawals during my term. Theso pupils, however, seemed to be in residence here temporarily. The highest attendance this week concluded has been 72. A visit from the agricultural instructor was made on the 9th inst. and as a result of his visit, the board has decided to endorse the environment certificate. The Coronation hall -was well filled on, Monday evening, the occasion being the annual concert of the first company of Bongotea Girl Guides, which has been trained by its captain, Miss Lorna Davis, and the hearty applause showed patrons’ appreciation of the local junior talent. The Guides were assisted by the Banger Company under the leadership of Mrs R. Scott The programme opened with the singing of “The Isle of Capri” by Guides and Bangrs with Miss Aileen Claasen as the soloist, this being followed by a folk dance by the Guides, "Hasto to the Wedding.” Rona Hill recited “It Couldn t Be Done” and “My Kingdom.” The Ragers then performed a humorous playetto “Mrs Ogbody Obliges,” those taking part being Mrs R. Scott (Mrs Ogbody), Miss E. Knight (Phyllis) and Miss A. Claasen (Gerald). After this gloom chaser came a trio on two steel guitars and a Spanish guitar, “Covered Waggon” by Misses Parkes (2) and R. Davis. A playette by the Guidos, “The Queen’s Cross," followed, the principal parts being taken by Phyllis Hill (Queen Elizabeth), Annie Fraser (Queen Anne), May »-- o t tenor (Queen Victoria) and Eda Hunt (a Guide). The concluding item of trip first half was a part song by Misses R. and N. Davis, A. Claasen, A. Buchanan, C. Richfield, B. Aird, and Mrs R. Scott, “Aloha Oe.” The programme re-opened with a play by the Rangers, “Mr John, •those taking part being Misses B. Davia (Miss Patricia), M. Bottcher (Mary), A. Claasen (Rosie), Mrs R. Scott (Hipasha Brown), Misses W. Parker (Josephine) and A, Buchanan (Angela). Miss Phyllis Hill recited “A Tale of a Tunnel ’ and A Dog and a Bee,” this being followed by Maori stick games, by Misses R. and N. Davis, W. Parker and E. Knight, after us in costume by the Guides. “The Tram Conductors” followed a vocal trio in costume by Rona Hill, Eda Hunt and Eileen Amey. The concluding item on the concert programme was a shadow play °y some visiting Boy Scouts. Supper followed and then a large number of couples took the floor to music supplied by Mrs A. D. Scott. The pianist for the concert was Miss Richards and the curtain was controlled by Miss H. Parker, the Guide ladies’ committee being in charge of the supper arrangements. The evening was a decided social and financial success. Mrs A. C. Eades and Miss Joyce Eades have returned from Wellington. Mr G. Baddeley has returned to Rongotea.
