Possible Bearing On Panmure Mystery

BUNDLE OF CLOTHING SEEN BY BOYS

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The mystery of a bundle of feminine clothing in the Tamaki river at Panmure is an incident, "which may conceivably have an important bearing on the mystery of the unknown woman whoso body was found last Sunday. The find was reported to-day. The articles were seen about four weeks before the body was recovered, a circumstance which agrees with the supposed length of time since the tragedy occurred.

Clarence Smith, of Panmure, and John Anderson, of Mount Wellington, both of whom are slightly more than 15 years of age, came across the floating bundle in the Tamaki river a few hundred yards upstream from the Panmure wharf where the woman’s body, which was unclad except for a singlet, was found. They said to-day they were fishing when they found the articles which were examined casually. Although they arc uncertain concerning the day of the find they definitely recollect observing a' dress, a stocking, a piece of a travelling rug and other garments. These wero wrapped in a woman’s outer coat and tied with a strip of green flax.

The boys accounted for their failure 'to remember the date because of their frequent fishing trips in the vicinity and the number of public holidays at that time. The boys attached no importance to the discovery, thinking the clothes had been discarded by Maoris and they let the bundle float away on the tide.

No trace has been found of the missing Maori girl, Mary Raymond, last seen in the city on May I.
