Inter-Club Debating
COMPETITION STARTS TO-NIGHT
In order to encourage debating in tho Manawatu district a trophy has been donated by the Manawaffl Daily Times Co., Ltd. This takes tho form of a handsome cup which will be known as “The Times Challenge Cup,” and is tor competition among debating societies functioning in the district.
The rules governing tho cup provide t hat the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society shall be t t initial holders. Other debating some ties may challenge for the cup which will be awarded to tho winners of a debate on any subject chosen. by the opposing teams. Tho rules have been made elastic enough to. encourage the widest possible competition, and it is hoped thereby to encourage young men and women to study the neglected art of expressing themselves properly in public. This evening in the Piccadilly tearooms the first challengers for the cup, the Buiuiythorpo Literary and Debating Society, will meet the holders, the subject chosen being “That machinery has been of benefit to mankind.” The debate will be open to the public, who arc cordially invited to attend.
