At a meeting of tho Automobile Association (Wellington) this week it was commented that tho civic authorities responsible for street lighting had not progressed as they should havo since the days of tho horse-drawn vehicle, and that tho candlepower of the lights had not been increased, nor had the lights been placed closer together, with the result that the number of accidents at night was rapidly increasing. A “Times” reporter who made inquiries yesterday as to whether local motorists considered the street lighting in Palmerston North deficient, was informed that no complaints had been made. “If the motorists' lights were as good as tho street lights, the position would bo much better, ’ ’ one driver said) pointing out that wrongly-focus-sed headlights and ears with only one light wero a danger. The matter has been the subject of repealed representations by the Automobile Association (Manawatu) to the City Council, and a conference is pending between the two bodies.
