Allegation of False Pretences
REMAND GRANTED IN COURT Staling that other charges were pending against accused, the police asked for a remand in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North yesterday, when John George Rutherford, described as an agent, aged -15 years, was charged that, on or about February 18, at Palmerston North, with intent to defraud, ho obtained from Hughes and Oossar Ltd., Auckland, £1 1/s Id by means of false pretence, representing that ho had obtained an order lor a three-gallon keg of whisky from Ronald Alexander Fraser, of Takapau. Mr W. Lowe Black, J.P., was on tho Bench, Detective E. Barling representing the police aud Mr J. M. Gordon appearing on behalf of accused. When the police asked for a week’s remand Mr Gordon requested that a fortnight be allowed. Detective Barling said that the police had no objection. Tho Magistrate at Wellington, where accused had been remanded to Palmerston North, had fixed bail at £IOO self and a surety of £IOO, he pointed out. Counsel sumbitted that as the amounts involved would probably only aggregato a small sum, bail be reduced to £SO in accused’s own recognisance and a surety of £SO. This was agreed to by the Bench, the remand being made until June 20 bv consent of counsel. "Accused, it was agreed, should report every third day to the police.
