CENTURY TO JEFFERIES The mid-week cricket competition was advanced a further stage yesterday in fine weather, but on heavy grounds. Optimists defeated Kiwi A by a substantial first innings margin, the feature of this game being a fine century by Jefferies, who hit 15 fours. In the other game played at the Sportsground the honours were shared by Combined Services and Kiwi B, the latter team being 15 runs short of their opponents’ first innings total with five wickets still in hand when stumps were drawn. The third match did not eventuate, Feilding defaulting to P.D.C. COMBINED SERVICES—KIWI B Kiwi B batted., first and after. Bulford and Gallichan had taken the score to 73 for the second wicket, the Combined Services bowlers took more of a hand in proceedings, and the innings closed for 143. Combined . Services started rather badly, but Rose and McGavin then became associated in a partnership which added 101 runs for tho fourth wicket. There was little time left when the batsmen started to force the paco and lost their wickets, and Services were still 16 runs short of victory when stumps were drawn. OPTIMISTS BEAT KIWI A The Optimist bowlers were much too good on the day and Kiwi A were all out for 42. Then Lyne and Jefferies became associated in the partnership which put the issue beyond doubt, Optimists winning by 142 runs on the first innings.
