Man's Legs in a Trunk

Mystery Surrounds Gruesome Discovery

LEGION RECRUIT SOUGHT FOR QUESTIONING

United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 7 p.m. LONDON, March 4.

The Daily Mail says that a cluo in the mystery surrounding the discovery of a man’s legs in a parcel under the seat of a train at Waterloo, led a Scotland Yard detective from Dover to Calais, where ho is now inquiring at the Foreign Legion Depot at Toul. It is understood that ho hopes to interview a recruit who enlisted recently at Dunkirk. The case might raise the important question of whether a legionnaire can be questioned by anyone except officers of the legion, in which those enlisted lose their identity.

A cablegram from London on March 1 stated:—

The mystery of legs in a train is the latest murder problem confronting the police. Tho discovery of a man’s legs, skilfully severed at the knee, in a brown paper parcel under the scat of a suburban train at Waterloo in February 25 led to police activity all the week, resulting, after the examination of hospitals and mortuaries, in an announcement to-day, that there arc no grounds for suspecting a grim hoax, which is the only alternative to murder.

As a description of tho possible appearance of the victim, following the medical examination of the legs, it is suggested that he was between 20 and 30 years and about sft Sin tall, slim, and possibly a dancer, as the toes wsic contracted owing to tight-fitting shoes.
