More Pay Demanded

It was considered that as the rates are 25 per cent, less than those offered to the larger centres, and not sufficient to maintain the men and their families, much less to pay their rents, as the opportunity to earn anything outside of the scheme was nil, the following resolution should be forwarded to the board: “This meeting of unemployed of Ashburton demands an increase of at least 10s a week all round.” It. was also decide to invoke the aid of local bodies.
