Certification of Romney Marsh Rams

SCHEME NOW IN ACTIVE OPERATION Per Press Association. MASTER-TON, Nov. 21. A scheme for the certification of Romney rams was brought into active operation last week. Certifying officers and Messrs A. L. Wheeler and L. H. Hogga.rd, accompanied by members o.t' tho executive committee of the Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders’ Association, have visited a number of flocks in the Wairarapa, Bangitikei and Manawatu districts with tho object of setting a standard to work to. Tho executive very soon arrived at tho conclusion that for stud rams the standard should be fairly high, but that for flock rams only a medium standard should bo adopted for the initial year, in order to avoid putting a premium on a few special sheep, but it was decided to aim at gradually raising the standard year by year.

To date, approximately 3500 rams have been inspected and certified, and it is not only gratifying to the executive, but will also bo of interest to the public, to know that breeders are accepting tho principles laid down, in a fine spirit and that they unanimously approve the practical utility of the lines on which the executive has worked in setting tho standard for the purpose of improving the quality of the flesh and the character of the wool of Romney sheep.
