Women’s Institutes

KAIRANGA. Mrs. W. McClelland presided over a fair attendance of members at the November meeting and extended a hearty welcome to visitors present. An apology for absonce was received from Mrs. F. Cummins with, regrets that it was impossible for her to retain the position of secretary. Mrs. G. Dnvey was elected to fill the vacancy. The duties of the secretary were undertaken for the afternoon by tho vice-president, Miss Zeta Loamy. An interesting report on the council meeting held at Levin was given by Mrs. P. Lemy. An invitation Was received from tho To Arakura W.I. to attend their concert and dance. Tho demonstrator for tho afternoon was Miss P. Meade, leather-work and the finished articles being displayed to an interested andience. There wore good entries in the competition for six pastry tarts which resulted: —Mrs. C. Turner 1, Mrs. L. Clark 2, and Mrs. E. Kilgour 3. The first prize for the article from two old felt hats allowing [id. for sundries, was annexed by M.rs. G. Turner with Mrs. E. Kilgour second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mcsdames H. It. Green, E. Kilgour and Miss M. Small, Mrs. AleLelland on behalf of thoso present, thanking Miss Meade for the demonstration. Competitions for tho December meeting will bo the best variety bowl of roses and an article of barbola work. Misses D. Capp, B. Wood and J. Eglinton to bo tho hostesses. SANSON. The sixth birthday of Sanson W.I. was celebrated on Wednesday afternoon, about ninety members and visitors being present. Mrs. Drew extended a warm welcome to all those present, and wished them a very pleasant aftornoon. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. EL Paterson, Dominion president, and Mrs. MeCorkindale, vice-president of the North-Weilington Federation, who were present as guests of honour. Greetings were conveyed from Miss Grant, Federation president, and from Mesdames Barnjcoat, E. E. Short, and W. G. Short, members of the executive. Mrs. Paterson gave an inspiring address on tho ideals of the movement. Mrs. MeCorkindale wished the Institute many more happy birthdays. At a suitable juncture Mrs. H. J. Fagan presented tho Institute with a banner, Mrs. Drew voicing thanks for tho gift. During the serving of afternoon tea, Mrs. E. Henson, the oldest member, lighted the six candles adorning the birthday cake, Miss M. Francis, the youngest member, extinguishing them. Mrs. Paterson cut the cake, which was handed round to all present. A nursery rhyme competition was wou by Mrs. Fordyce, A pianoforte solo rendered by Miss M. Francis gave pleasure while gleo songs contributed by members, and a vocal' duet by Mrs. J. Tricker and Airs. E. Henson were much appreciated. A playette, “The Impostor/ ’ provided entertainment, tho following taking parts: —Mcsdames Bowater, Aiken, Adams, and Sadler, Misses Dwyer and Murphy.

TAIKOREA, The November meeting was held in the Taikorea Half on Wednesday, when there was a good attendance of members presided over by the president Mrs Hill. Beforo the usual business was commenced, sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Prior, a member who recently lost her brother, all members standing for a moment jn silence. The report of the social evening showed a good credit after all expenses were paid, and also a donation made to the hall. It was decided to send a donation to the Dominion Federation at an early date. A very interesting talk on “Travels Abroad” was given by Mrs. C. Hamlin, who recently returned from a trip overseas. Mrs. Hamlin also displayed some very fine photos and pictures of different parts of tho countries which she visited, which were very much admired by all. The competition for tho best article made from old car tubes was won by Miss J. Hchir, with Mrs. Cornwall second and Miss R. Ferris third. It was decided to have only one competition, instead of junior and senior, owing to lack of entries. The competition was kindly judged by Mesdames C. and H. Hamlin. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Johnston, O'Connor and Miss M. Smith, following which the National Anthem brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. MILSON. There was a good attendance of members at the November meeting, when Mrs. F. G. Murphy presided, and three new members wore welcomed. Reports on the half yearly council meeting at Levin, and tho group meeting, were given by Miss Prentice and Mrs. Cutten. It was decided to hold a flower show in February, schedules to be distributed next meeting. Members wore notified that next meeting would take tho form of a visitors’ afternoon and the programme will include a demonstration in cake icing, the competition to bo for the best iced cake. During tho afternoon, Mrs. Murphy asked Miss Robinson to accept from tho members, a, handsome fireside chair, together, with the best wishes of all. Miss Robinson . briefly replied, and was accorded musical honours. A demonstration on brass work was given by Mr. Flich, and an interesting talk on dahlia growing by Mr. Morreen, both being accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was sorved by tho hostesses, Mesdames Mudgway, Burr, Colman, Clements, Dolanoy, Johansen, King, Rcnwick, Saunders, Spooner, Stidolph and Miss Davidson, and the afternoon closed with the National Anthem. POSTON. Mrs. F, Procter (vice-president) presided over the monthly,meeting of the Foxton Women's Institute in 'the absence of Mrs. E. Titcombe (president). There was a large attendance of members present and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Correspondence was read and dealt with and it was decided that the Dramatic Club should hold an open night and entertain members and visitors on the 23rd. inst. The

proceeds from -this function will be devoted to a children’s Christmas party to be held on December 15. The guessing competition was won by Mrs. J. T. Edwards, the prize being a nicely worked tray cloth which had been presented by tho Misses Stevenson before their departure from Foxton. The competition for the best fruit squares was won by Mrs. Blyth, Mrs. Proctor being second. Tho competition for the best and cheapest Christmas gift was won by Airs. Blyth with Airs. Proctor second. During the afternoon Mrs. J. Symoa gave an interesting and instructive demonstration on cake icing, and a much appreciated song, “The Old Spinning Wheel ’ 1 was contributed by Mrs. Bichardson, An amusing game played during tho afternoon was won by Miss AfcEwcn. Tho hostesses for the afternoon, 'Alesdames Shortt, Richardson, AlcPhaiV, Thomas, McEwen, Thomson, Ross, Speirs, and Aliss Heath, dispensed afternoon tea which was greatly enjoyed, Tho motto for the month is ‘Make up your mind to do what is right, and turn your back to the wall and fight.” KOPUTAROA. There was a fair attendance of members and some visitors from Kimberley W.I. present at tho November meeting, Airs. Best (v.p.) presiding over the meeting in the absence of the president. An excellent demonstration on brasswork was given by Airs. A. Griffith, Te Arakura, who also had for exhibition a number of novelties. The month’s competitions were for. the most attractive Christmas novelty and' in the junior section three paper hats. The subject for the roll call was “Aly pet superstition.” Before concluding the afternoon, a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Griffith,
