Albury Murder Case

REPORT PROM SHANGHAI According to information received in Australia by cable from Shanghai, a girl answering the description of the victim of the recent Albury murder is believed to have visited Shanghai. She was Miss M. E. McLaughlen, of Irish ancestry, and she spent about two months in Shanghai towards the end of last year. On Tending in an Australian paper the description of the victuin, Mr Anderson, a well-known Shanghai business man, volunteered information to the police. He said he had travelled with his wife from Shanghai to Sourabaya with this girl, who said she was going to Australia. The girl, Mr Anderson, and his party, I'eft Shanghai in the Dutch vessel Tjisadano for a tour to Bali Island. The former later boarded the steamer Nieuw Zeeland at Singapore for Australia, where, she said, she would meet her brother, with the object of attending the Melbourne Centenarv celebrations, her brother being an American doctor. Miss McLaughlen said she had been in Australia before, having relatives at Bundaberg, where she stayed, at cither the Criterion or the Royal' Hotel, in 1933. She told Mr Anderson she had been left sufficient money to make her independent. When in Shanghai she associated with Madame Gatehouse and Madame Austin, both of whom are supposed to be Australians. She was then living at the Mctropolc Hotel, and all three mixed with good society. Mr Anderson said his attention was drawn to the Albury murder following the publication in Australia of details of the ‘‘pyjama girl” mystery, and that the description of the victim coincided with that of Miss McLaughlen,
