Papatawa

From Our Own Correspondent. We are being blessed with a spell of verv hot and sunny days. All round there have been showers and particularly heavy ones in Dannevirke, but they have left Papatawa alone until last week when a torrential downpour did much good. The farmers were needing rain and the tanks were getting very low in the majority of cases. Quite a lot of ploughing is being carried on in the district and one can see paddocks ploughed on top and on the sides of several hills in the neighbourhood. During the week children attended the dental clinic in Woodville. A rather unfortunate and painful accident befell the young daughter of Mr. Lang during the week. The little girl who is only three years old, was playing with other children and had the misfortune to have a garden fork driven through her foot. She is, according to latest reports. progrossing favourably. At the last meeting of the Women’s Institue it was decided to enter a court in the forthcoming Woodville Horticultural Society’s Jubilee Show. It is anticipated that the Papatawa W.I. will be able to exhibit very good work in the arts and crafts section and home industries sectl<Tl'ie local Women’s Institute held their fourth birthday party on Friday evening. There was a big crowd present and there were visitors from neighbouring institutes. Mrs. Martin, president, extended a welcome to all and expressed the hope that each one would have a very pleasant and happy evening. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs. Paterson, Dominion president; Mrs. Tod, Southern Hawke’s Bay president; Mr 3. Campbell, hon. secretary of Southern.Hawke’s Bay

Federation; and Mrs. Norman, president of Hopelands-Kumeroa Institute. Mrs. Martin apologised for the absence of Mr. Donaldson’s party from Dannevirke, and extended very hearty thanks to Woodville W. 1., which had come to the rescue. Singing opened the programme and this was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mrs. McCormick proved an able and popular leader. Mr. Schroder then sang and was encored. The next item was a small play, “Both Ways." This was given by members of the Papatawa W.I. and Mr. Grant. These players who were making thenfirst appearance did remarkably well and were well received. Mr. Grant as the hero was very good in his part and deserves high praise. The other parts were taken by Mrs. J. Mabey, Mrs. N. Burlace, Misses E. and D. Hutchinson. The W.I. are very proud of tneir first effort, and hope that they will soon be seen again in a further effort. Mr. A. Hall gave two recitations and members of the Woodville W.I. then gave a sketch entitled "Be Calm.” This was a very hilarious comedy from start to finish. The performers in this were Mrs. McNeil, Miss J. Kirkpatrick, Miss Cross, Messrs. Sinclair, Hurley and De Mahnanche. Another item that proved very popular was a duet sung by Mrs. McCormick and Mrs. Schroder. That concluded the programme and then dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Schroder and Mr. Gleadow. Just before supper was finished, the birthday cake (adorned with four candle's), made and iced by Mrs. J. Hutchinson, snr., and her daughters, was cut by Mrs. Bennett, president of the Woodville W.I. Mrs. Burnett also had the honour of lighting and extinguishing the candles. In a happy speech she -expressed the. best wishes of the Woodville W.I. and her appreciation ' of the honour of cutting the cake. Bouquets were, presented to Mrs. Martin (president, of Papatawa W. 1.), Mrs. Dickin (hon. secretary), Mrs. Burlace (hon. treasurer) and Mrs. Burnett. ' .. Two special dances were held .during the evening, a spot waltz being won by Miss Loader and Mr. R. Pentecost, while a waltzing competition was annexed by Mr. and Mrs. Mabey. A Christmas cake, donated by Mrs. J. S. eNlson, was won by Mrs. C. Sage.
