High Standard Seen at Bastings Tournament

CANDY BEATEN IN WELTER FINAL Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Night. Tho concluding programme of the New Zealand amateur boxing championships was presented this evening, when the finals of all eight divisions were staged before the biggest house seen at a boxing tournament here for many years. The standard of boxing was in keeping with the previous night, and was satisfactory, a splendid evening’s boxing being provided. The titles were well distributed, the eight going to as many different districts, three going to the South Island and five to the North. Gordon (the Taranaki featherweight) was awarded the Jamieson Belt, for tho most scientific display at the tournament, the award being well merited. The attendance over the whole of the tourney was satisfactory, and it is anticipated that a profit will result. Results were: — Flyweight. E, Boyle (Hawke’s Bay), 7.10-1, beat L. Larsen (Wellington), 7.13, after a splendid exhibition, Tho local boy, scoring well, earned the title. Bantamweight. J. Cadwalladcr (Wairarapa), 8.5, beat J. Finuagau (Wellington), 8.5, in a fast and bright bout, tho pair being very evenly matched. Featherweight. C, Gordon (Taranaki), 8.9, beat A. Stock (Hawke's Bay), 8.12, on points. The winner gave a particularly clever showing against a strong and hard hitter. Lightweight, Semi-lnials.

J. Jarvis (Taranaki) beat C. Rush (Hawke’s Bay) by default. W. Hogg (Auckland), 9.44, beat J. Ramsay (Otago), 9.4, on points, in a splendid contest. Final. W. Hogg (Auckland), 9.41, beat J. Jarvis (Taranaki), 9.14, on points. The Aucklander piled up points in the early stages, and though Jarvis made a great bid over the second half of the contest, he was unable to make up the leeway. Welterweight,' (Semi-final. W. G. Parris (Wellington), 10.1-J, beat J. Easton (Oamaru), 10.7, oil points. M. Candy (Marton), 10.32, beat F. Hutchins (Taranaki), 10.5, on points. Both bouts were thrillers, the winners proving rugged fighters. v Final. G. Parris (Wellington), 10.3, beat M. Candy (Marton), 10.5, on points. It was a hard and strenuous light, with the Wcllingtonian getting a narrow win. Middleweight. W. Howson (Greymouth), 11.01, boat R, B. Martin (Auckland), 11.4. The South Islander was the more aggressive and shaded his man over each round to win on points. Light-Heavyweight. G. Muir (Southland), 11.12. beat M. Soane (Motucka), 11.12. The winner scored a, fairly close decision after a good, hard fight, in which Soane was unable to counter a. straight left. Heavyweight. A. J. Bourne (Christchurch), 12.21, beat W. l’ascoc (Southland), 12.10, on points. It was a good, hard bout, with Bourne being the more enterprising.

Mr. Aldridge, secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Council, this morning received a cable stating that the Australian team for New Zealand, sailing .by the Marama on Friday next, is as follow :s Flyweight: 11. Cooper (Victoria). Bantamweight; B. Gillum (Queensland). Featherweight: J. Moore (New South Wales). Lightweight: A. Taylor (Tasmania). Welterweight: A. Warbrick (Queensland). Middleweight: 11. Sinclair (Queensland). Light-heavy-weight: W. Burns (Queensland). Heavyweight: L. In,skip (New South Wales). Mr Bush, the manager of the New Zealand team which visited Australia last year, states the Australian team is a strong combination. The New Zealand champions will need their best form to hold the visitors.
