Theft of Jewellery Worth £I4OO
BURGLAR-PROOF SHOP ENTERED THROUGH MANHOLE Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 21. The latest and the most serious of a number of burglaries committed in Auckland City in recent weeks was discovered at midnight. The large modern shop of James Pascoc, jeweller, in Karangahapc road, was entered and gold and jewellery valued at approximately £I4OO was removed from showcases just inside tho front door, although tho premises were well lighted. The shop is in a threc-storcycd building specially constructed to be burg-lar-proof, but last night the thieves got on the roof, levered off the solid iron and concrete top of a manhole, and slid down into the workroom. They ransacked the accountant’s office and stole all the repair jobs which were kept there awaiting their owners. They then descended to the ground floor, where they must have spent a considerable time working behind a counter, which was covered with dust-sheeting. They carefully discriminated between gold and rolled gold articles, throwing the latter on tho floor, but removing diamond rings, gold rings, watches, studs, etc. About midnight a constable at the back of the building discovered the doors at the cart entrance open, and gave the alarm.
