Charges of Burglary

TWO MEN BEFORE COURT AT WELLINGTON. Ter Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. Though it had been stated by tho police that about 50 charges would be preferred against two men, only ten wero made when they appeared to-day, but the cvidenco tendered tvas long enough to last all day. Accused were labourers, Arthur Cudby, aged 36, and Mervyn John. Cudby, aged 32, and the charges were all connected rvith burglaries at Lyall Bay and other places about Wellington. Twenty-one civilians and seven polico officers are Avitncsscs, and there are many exhibits. The polico cvidenco revealed that in the period between Juno 1 and August 20 of this year 117 houses had been broken into in Wellington and suburbs, and over £586 stolen.

Questioned regarding a large sum of money possessed by him and liis -wife, and how ho got the money seeing ho had not been Avorking for a considerable time, accused said ho Avon it backing racehorses with two bookmakers. He admitted he had not been Avorking for 12 months.
