Coates: “Pending tho hoped-for conclusion of negotiations with the Government oi tho Commonwealth of Australia, arrangements have been made for a further 50,000 eases of oranges from South Australia to arrive in the Dominion during October. Questions relating to orange supplies and orange prices have received much publicity of late and direct representations havo been made to mo by the retailers. “The rclativo prices at which this fruit is sold in Australia and New Zealand -cities respectively are used as an argument to show that New Zealand consumers are hardly treated. Inquiries indicate that, having regard to all circumstances, no unreasonable profits arc being made and that the producers are receiving only about -1/* per bushel nett on the average. “Now that tho unavoidable delay caused by the Federal elections in Australia can be regarded as nearing an end, tho negotiations will be resumed as soon as possible in the hope that tho questions at issue ran bo quickly settled on a mutually satisfactory basis. The latest discussions which took place opened the way to this.”
