MR ALLAN CLELAND At an early hour yesterday morning, following his arrival homo in Beattie street, after attending a social and dance, Mr Allan Clcland expired as the result of a stroke. Tho late Mr Clcland, who was 70 years of ago, followed tlio occupation of a master painter and was well known throughout Fcilding and district. lie always took an active interest in both local and national politics and on several occasions contested for municipal' honours, serving for one period during the regime of tho late Mayor, Mr G. J. Harford. Born in the North of Ireland, the late Mr Clcland ctuno to New Zealand as a young man, first residing in Taranaki and then coming to Fcilding in 1906 to join the firm of Harford and Sons, painters. As a volunteer fireman Mr Clcland’s services were availed of on his arrival in Fcilding, and ho was elected captain of the old volunteer tiro brigade and later became superintendent for a term, and retired with 40 years’ service to his credit. On leaving Messrs Harford and Sons, Mr Clcland went into business on his own account and was actively engaged on Ms work until "Wednesday. llis sudden passing will come as a shock to a wide circle of friends, whoso sympathy will go out to Mrs Clcland and her family in their sad bereavement. MR W. 11. KARSTEN Tlio death took place at Fcilding on Wednesday of Mr "William Henry Karstcn in his 71st year, following a lengthy illness. The late Mr Karstcn came from an old Nelson family who settled in the province in tho pioneering days and followed farming pursuits. From Nelson Mr Karsten went to "Wellington, and following a period in business in the Capital City, followed farming pursuits at Waikanae, Baincsse and at Askhurst, being well known as a breeder and a judge of Ayrshire cattle. Ito frequently judged at the Fcilding show and. was an enthusiast for tho Ayrshire breed. Retiring from an active life on the land, the late Mr Karstcn settled in Fctiding, and some two years ago suffered a stroke which left him in poor health. Ho was of a kindly and genial disposition and made a host of friends who will extend deep sympathy to the four daughters who survive him. Mrs Karstcn predeceased him about two years ago. The daughters arc Misses M. and I. Karstcn (Fcilding), Mrs C. Olliver (To Kuiti), and Mrs 11. Dewis (Taupo).
