Stanway Farmer’s Achievement

From Our Own Correspondent Remarkable Dairy Herd.

In the recent herd-testing results, the remarkable performance of Mr. A. Collingham's herd of Jersey cows, is worthy of special mention. \\ Kh an av - erase of 44!» lbs. of butter fat from twentv cows, the herd was beaten b only two other herds, both of which consisted of only five cows. It is interesting to note that Mr. Collingham bred his own herd, and has been for the past two seasons dogged by bad luck, which has materially artected this year's results. He has had the misfortune to loso no fewer than nine cows, due to maminitis and other causes nine cows whicli would have averaged out at 450 lbs pf butterfat per cow. These losses have been replaced by first and second cahors whose yield, of course, must be far less than that of matured cows, and if the nine cows lost had still been in the herd, it would have made a difierence in the final results of 00 lbs oi butteifat 1 More honour, then, to Mr. Collingham, who would rather fill his herd with the young cows of Ills own breeding, than buy in other matured cows. This farmer attributes his fine record to the fact that lie relies solely on grass feeding during the spring, until as late as February, when he feeds out maize, ehou moodier, and turnips. Another evidence of the treatment o. this herd is seen in the fact that, except in one bail, where heifers are milked, there are neither head bails nor leg ropes In fact, any one of Die cows can quite easily be milked out in the paddock. Mr 15 Christian presided over the following at a meeting of the school committee held on "Wednesday, July «0.. Messrs J. G. MacMillan, J. YV. Parsons, J Watherston, F. Cowdrey. The teachei, Mr S G Still, was also present. A communication regarding the pine trees opposite the school, was received from Mr. Port, who stated that, while he was unable to do anything in the matter, lie would consult the trustees on their next visit to the estate, with a view to having the trees felled. Mr. Parsons reported that the lotara posts for the Jubilee Memorial Gate were ready for dressing, the entertainment arranged for August u was then discussed, and it was decided to adhere to the euchre tournament and dance,'as previously arranged, with slMitly less changes than lor the concert and dance. Mr. K Christian was appointed in charge of the euchre Mi. E. (’owdrev jis doorkeeped, mul ATr. S. G. •Still as \\f.C. for the dance. The arrangements for the fancy dress ball were left in the hands of the teacher, the teacher was authorised to purchase vases for the schoolroom, and extra utenslra foi the cocoa.
