Fall Down Companionway Into Forecastle
WATERSIDE WORKER’S DEATH INVESTIGATED. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The incpiest into the death of Alfred Osborne, aged 49, who died on May 23, following a fall down the companionway into the forecastle of the Union Company’s steamer Karepo, which -was being fumigated with powerful gas, was concluded by the Coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. The Coroner said his Itiuding was that death itself had taken place as a result of bronchitis following burns. He would leavo his verdict open as to what had caused deceased to fall down the conipanionway. There was not sufficient evidence to dclcnnino whether he had slipped and fallen or whether ho had fallen as a result of being seized with sudden dizziness through inhalation of the gas. Witnesses had said they regarded it as unnecessary for men working in the open to wear masks. As a result he was unable to add a rider concerning the method to be adopted in future,
