Feilding Farmers’ Root Crop Competition

OVER ICO TONS MANGELS PER ACRE At yesterday?* meeting of the Fcilding branch of the Farmers' Union the results of the root crop competition were announced as follow: Mangels U. Hancock, Awahuri, 107.07 tens per acre, 1. Minson and Marshall, Vaituna. 97.02 tons per aero, 2. H. Hancock, Awahuri, 95.4 tons per acre,. 3. A. ,T. Baxter, S2.G tons per acre, 4. Swedes 11. Hare, Arapata, 70. S tons per acre, 1. A. Kidd, Kiwitca, G 3.4 tons per acre, 2. T. Craine, Kiwitea, 02.1 tons per acre, 3. T. Craine, GO.l tons per acre, 4. Discussing the results of the rootcrop competition, the chairman (Mr J. 11. Mason) said that the figures were most satisfactory. The tonnage was higher than ever before and reflected the value of the competition. There were just on 30 entries. Mr J. B. Bradley said that the results were very interesting, for they showed what could be accomplished. Ho recalled that when the competition was started 50 tons to the acic was considered very good, but now 100 tons was being produced. He felt that the union was to lie congratulated in introducing the competition, for it had encouraged the farmer to go into the matter of root crop growing seriously. The chairman said that it was proposed to publish tho detailed report when it was received from, the Agricultural Department.
