MEETING OF THE COUNCIL T.lie Kiwi tea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. I’. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present Crs. IV. I’. Shaw, F. O. Slack, J. A. T. Brown, J. A. Williamson, F. E. Tappin, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon and W.’T. Wood. Annual Meeting At the annual meeting of the council Cr. L. T. McLean was re elected chairman oa (lie motion of Cr. Shaw, who eulogised Or. McLean’s work. Crs. Shannon and Hair endorsed the remarks of Cr. Shaw. Returning thanks Cr. McLean said that the duties had been very pleasant to him and the council was in a very happy position. He said that the council' had the benefit of the services of a very capable clerk in Mr W. L. Ilcsscltinc —(Hear, hear) —and it was fortunate in having its business so skilfully handled. Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with: — From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedule of "thirds” accrued from Crown sections for the half-year ended 31/3/3-1, amounting to £4B 13s 2d.—Received. From the Public Works Department, regarding applications for grants for road and other works, and advising that applications must be forwarded not later than May 23. —Received. From the Main Highways Board, regarding the annual review of main highways, and requesting the council to forward any applications to the Public Works Department.- —Received.

From the Commissioner of Transport, advising that as a considerable number of local authorities and other interested bodies have not yet been able to furnish their comments on the proposed amendments to motor regulations, it has been decided to allow additional time in which to consider the various points involved. The writer advised that it was therefore impossible to have the new regulations gazetted in time for the forthcoming licensing period.—Recei vcd.

From Mr 11. G. Fankhauser. applying .for a renewal of slaughter-house license No. W 4.0, in respect of premises situated at Rangiwahia. —Agreed to. From Mrs If. J. Hancox, drawing the council’s attention to the state of the culverts in front of her property at Rangiwahia. —Referred to overseer. From tlio Waitomo County Council, with reference to the ruling on the liability of the State Advances Department, and thanking the. council for its support in connection therewith. The writer added that the views expressed by the various counties were considered by his council at its last meeting, and as the majority were in favour of first approaching the executive of the New Zealand Counties’ Association before submitting a test case, it was decided to adopt this course. —Cr. Hair thought that it. was high time, action was taken to test the position, and agreed that it was better that, the Counties’ Association should take the matter up. Practically every local body was suffering through the loss ot rates on Crown properties and it. was unfair I n expect, that private. mortgagees should bo forced lo pay while the Crown, escaped. The. council agreed to support- the proposal of the Maitomo Count v.

Front the Mayor of Palmerston North, requesting the council’s support of a. resolution objecting to the payments being made under (he sust.cna.nce system introduced in. Palmerston North bv the Unemployment Board, — Received. Overseer's Report The county overseer (Mr F. H. Eggers) reported as follows: — Cheltenham Riding: The roadman had attended to the cleaning out of water-tables and other maintenance work. The sections of main highways as well as llaync.’s line, Beaconsfield Valley road and Cheltenham Crossroad. Pad been kept in order by the grader.

Kiwitca Biding: The section of the No. 52 main highway had been trimmed bv the grader; also the Upper Bcaeonsfie'i'd Valley road. Water-tables bad been attended to and the tern outback on Mcßetli’s line. Drains and watertables had received attention on the Upper Bcaeonsfield Valley road. Waituna Biding: The section of the Xo. 377 main highway in this riding had been trimmed by the grader. The roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work in his length, as well as improving sharp bends on the No. 377 main highway.

Ongo Biding; The contractors delivered -IS cubic yards of metal on AA aituna Valley road. The section of the. No. 377 main highway had been kept in order by the grader. The roadman had attended to surface work and cleaning out drains and water-tables in the riding; also assisting with metal carting in Peep-o-Dav riding. Kimbolton Biding: The usual maintenance work throughout, the riding and received attention, and the roadman had also asissted with the. filling--3n of ruts and cleaning out water-

tables in the Kiwitca riding. Tho

main highway sections of road had

been kept in fair condition by the grader. Peep-o-Day Riding: The roadman in the eastern section of the riding had attended to surface work,. cleaning out water-tables and cutting back fern and scrub on the section of No. 02 main highway, ns well as attending to similar work oa the Peep-o-Day and Hogg's roads. On'the western section the roadman had attended to usual maintenance work; also assisting with metal carting on Pakihikura and KiwitcaTapuac roads. During the . mouth 343 cubic yards of maintenance metal was put out. Minor repair work had been carried out on the clay section of the Mangapawa road. Pakihikura Riding: The small grader had carried out extensive grading work in the riding during the past month, and the Ohingaiti-Pemberton, Peka, Mungamako, McGregor's and Sandon Block roads had all been trimmed. The contractor had made satisfactory progress carting out maintenance metal. The following quantities had been delivered: —Marshall's road, 230 cubic yards; Peka road, SO cubic yards. The whole of the 800 cubic yards contract would be completed during the current month.

Rangiwahia Riding: The section of tho No. 52 main highway had been trimmed by the grader, and the usual maintenance work throughout the riding attended to, while the ncwfy-mctal-lcd sections of the Main South road had been trimmed by tho grader. Improvement work had been carried oui on the. Mangahuia East road, and a limited quantity of maintenance metal carried out.

llautapu Riding: The. usual maintenance work, in the way of removing small slips, cleaning out water-tables and trimming in new metal, had been carried out. The work of widening the Upper Titirangi road was almost completed, the work being carried out in a very satisfactory manner. Progress had been maintained with the construction of the small bridge over the Mangakukeke stream, and this work should be completed about the middle of next month.
