Wednesday Rugby Competition

PROSPECTS ARE BRIGHT The Wednesday Rugby competition, with the “Oiler" cup as a trophy, is due to start nest Wednesday, and with lire Talmerston North teams, a sixth from Marton and another from Fcilding, the success of this series appears to be assured. The various clubs arc keen and further practice games were played yesterday at the Showgrounds. Tirates took t.hc field against St. Patrick’s, while Star’s XV. were matched with United, this game being on the oval. The. teams might- not, have been at full strength, but there was an abundance of players, a number not being able to get a place in the teams. TII6 grounds were heavy and the rain made the ball hard to handle. Despite tho handicaps, however, the football was quite intcrestiig, tiie games being mainly confined to tho forward divisions. The competition games commence next week and it is evident that there arc several lads whose claims will have to be considered when Manawatu’s representative team is being selected. STAR BEAT UNITED In the game played on the oval Star accounted for United by 19 points to five, but the run of the play was much more even than the scores would indicate. Tho winners started off at a great rate, and it, was not long before Allen tucked the ball under his arm and broke through to score in n ihandy position. He converted and bt. Pat. ’s were five points , on. Russqll liken scored for Pirates but Mclver failed with a difficult kick. Pirates, who woro going well, took tho lead when Mclver scored, but tho try was right in the corner and Fletcher failed to find the uprights. It looked as if Pirates would carry tho day, but Allen, who was very enterprising all through, managed to get over again and St. Pat’s led by two points. Pirates mado desperate efforts over the last stages of the game, and they went close on
