Sabbath Desecration

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l was rather struck by two statements made by Ensign Thorne during his address over 2ZO yesterday in the course of the devotional service. He made reference to Sabbath desecration, and referred to expressions made of late in our own city. “There is no justification for Sabbath breaking,” said the Ensign, but after referring to the lot of tho worker, who is often hegrd complaining that ho has only Sunday for recreation, the Ensign went on to state that he believed in a fiveday week for work. This provided for Saturday recreation, and Sunday observance of the Lords daj. I heartily agree, and I believe that it is only the present system which is to blame for Sabbath breaking. Take the lot of the worker who has one half-day per week holiday. If he utilises it in sport he 1 must neglect his garden. If he works in his garden he loses his sport, and so the necessity for yielding to Sabbath breaking. So few preachers of the Gospel have much time for Socialism, when at tho same time I believe it would prove the greatest assistance to true Christianity. ° i believe strictly in the observance of the Sabbath and I will thus agree with Ensign Thorne’s reference to this subject. I do, however, take exception to his statement that it is a Chris-tian-like attitude to employ a girl for 5s per week to allcviato unemployment and assist the poor girls in need. of work. Too much of this sort of thing is going on to-day, such as so-called society women playing bridge while the servant is toiling hard for a pittance like ss. A person who cannot give more than 5s per week to a girl should not employ anybody, as it would be evident they were living above their means. I would suggest that they make the donation to the Mayor s fund instead, and provo their genuine Christianity.—l am, etc., SQUARE DEAL. Palmerston North, Oct. 29.
