From Our Own Correspondent. Kumeroa Tennis Courts. Saturday last was quite a red letter day for the tennis enthusiasts of the Kumeroa district, the occasion being the official opening of the new courts. For some time past the only court available at Kumeroa was one on tho school grounds, and recently owing to tho increased number of players this has proved quite inadequate to accommodate those desiring to play. Representations were made to the Kumeroa Domain Board with the result that tho board laid down two bitumen courts and these have now been handed over to the Tennis Club which is decidedly fortunate in having such a line playing area put at their disposal. Mr. W. Miller, chairman of the Domain Board, said that the courts would fill a long felt want and he sincerely hoped that the tennis players of the district would have many pleasant games thereon. Ho then called on Mrs. Miller to hit the first ball over the net. A yankee tournament was played during tho afternoon, the winners being Mrs. J. Little and N. Bartle. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the lady members. Results of the tournament are as follow: —N. Bartle and Mrs. J. Little, 5 wins, no losses; C. Brown and Miss Mclnnes, 4 wins, 1 loss; W. Thom and Miss D. O’Hagen, 4 wins, 1 loss; W. Norman and Miss Smyth, 4 wins, 1 loss; I. Mackay and Miss V. Toogood, 3 wins, 2 losses; L. Young and Mrs. Smyth, 4 wins, 1 loss; W. Smyth and Miss D. O’Hagen, 2 wins, 3 losses; W. Jackson and Miss J. Brown, 2 wins, 3 losses; J. Little and Miss M Cranfield, 2 wins, 3 losses; D. Liley and Miss N. Toogood, 1 win, 4 losses; B. Cheyne and Mrs. W. Smith, 1 win, 4 losses; H. Brown and Miss Last, 1 win, 4 losses; 1. Cheyne and W. Toogood, 1 win, 4 losses; Weaver and Miss Arlidge, 1 win, 4 losses. To finish up a successful day a dance was held in tho Kumeroa hall in the evening which also proved to be very successful, there being an excellent attenance. Music was kindly supplied by Mr. N. Bartle, extras being played by Misses D. Last and M. Cranfield. R.S.A. Ball. The Woodville Returned Soldiers’ Association held their annual ball on Monday evening, the function once again proving its popularity by tho largo attendance. Tho big hall was brightly decorated with flags and paper streamers and coloured lights, the decorations being carried out by a special committee under the supervision of Mr. I. C. MacLean. The supper arrangements?whicb were In the hands of Mr. S. L. Fannin, assisted by a strong ladies’ committee consisting of Mesdames J. Elder, Seeker, F. Williams, C. Ware, D. McCool, L. Hurley, IS. Nicholson, I. C. Mac Lean, J. Charles, A. K. Boyd and T. A, B. Sinclair, were very ably carried out, the mess orderlies consisting of a squad of returned men doing their job in a style that showed that their training of a few years ago had not been forgotten. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Messrs W. J. Miller, S. L. Fannin, O. W. Cross and L. Hurley. The music was supplied by the local orchestra under the leadership of Mr. H. Brooker, who kindly gave his services gratuitously. Extra dances were played by Messrs N. Bartle, P. Harris (accordeon) and 11. Brooker. The association's secretary, Mr. K. B. Gothard, also did his part in connection with the function in a business-like manner and the many jobs that fell to his lot were all done without a hitch of any description. Dancing was kept up until the early hours of the morning. Golf. Several Woodville players participated in the Pahlatua Golf Club's annual open tournament over the Labour Day weekend. Mr. H. Lagor was successful in winning tho Tararua handicap event, beating Mr. R. Marsh in tho nnal 4 and 2. Mr. Lagor was also successful in this event last year. Mr. E. Wilson, in the same event, was successful in winning his first two matches but was defeated by a small margin in the semi-final. Mr. F. Mackio reached the sem-linal of the championship event, being defeated in that round by Mr. D. Taverner, of Carterton.
