Cricket Season Opens in Feilding

OPENING- GAMES IN DULL WEATHER.

The cricket Boason in Feilding was opened on Saturday afternoon in dull, overcast weather, Kowhai Park being the location of the four matches played. In each ease tho wickets were in first-' class order, but tho outfield was not at’ its best. In the first round of the senior competition Feilding opened against Public Service and completed the first strike for 103, Donaldson providing a nice 37. The team has been strengthened -by the inclusion of Walter Crooke, once a consistent bat, who has given up the racquet for the willow, and John Sugden. Both of these players contributed double figures, whilo Dunn, who opened with Laing, provided 16 in an effort which disclosed that ho is a sure bat. Skipper Donaldson’s contribution was decidedly refreshing, and generally the team’s opening display promises well. Tho scoring was brisk, and the lay of the wieket, changed , from its old position, was a decided improvement. Public Scrvico made a disappointing response, runs comng very slowly. The early dismissal of the opening bats, Hart and Wild, was not encouraging, and a 3 the evening approached tho bats exercised every caution, since the dull light was difficult. When stumps were drawn for the day tho Service had lost four wickets for 41. Brisk play was witnessed in the other senior fixture, Colytou v. Old Boys, the country eleven opening to. provide 120, of which Bramwell supplied 43. This team has beeu much strengthened by tho inclusion of the .Rev. E. O. Blamires, and the total made, with, one man short, augurs well. Old Boys, who were two . men short, were disappointing, their batting effort producing 66. Colytou opened its second account, and at stu-mps had lost one wicket for 32. These matches will ■ bo concluded next week. In tho junior games Feilding B defeated Wesley, and High School accounted for Sanson.
