Women's Christian Temperance Union

Instead of tho usual meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, a party was held yesterday afternoon in St. children or rue cradlo roll and their mothers, Tho president (Miss Moore) was in tho chair. Proceedings commenced with a devotional reading and talk by Mrs Ritchie, after which songs were, contributed by Miss Holbrook and-- Mrs- 'Ram '-(their accompaniments being played by Mrs Thompson and Mrs Pago respectively). A song was given by Mrs Gourlay (to her own autoharp accompaniment); a recitation was

pleasingly rendered by Mrs Chittenden; several much-appreciated items were contributed by children of Willard Home; whilo Mrs J. F. Clausen gave a talk to mothers. In a few gracious words Miss Mooro wolcomod tho mothers and children, Mrs Ferguson (ex-president), and Mrs H. Patorson, of Pahiatua (district president). Mrs T. R-. Hodder, dressed as fairy godmother tn black silk dress, white laco shawl and white cap, presented each child with a gift, a lucky packet, and a nice basket of sweets, tho one-year-old children receiving their gift first, then tho two-year-olds, then tho three-year-olds, and so on up to and including tho oight-year-olds (eight years being tho age-limit for children on tho cradlo roll). Afternoon tea was under tho capable control of Mrs A. W. Thompson and Mrs W.

Miss Moore expressed her appreciation of the large gathering, and said much of tho credit for tho success of tho aftornoon was due to Mrs Dorset and Miss Arthur, who had issued the invitations. She also said she wished to warmly thank Mrs Clausen for her kindness in providing the gifts for the children; Mrs Singh, for contributing ' tho lucky packets; and Miss Vera -Willson, for making tho pretty sweot ■ baskets and their enclosed sweets.
