ASHHURST DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB From Our Own Correspondent. The newly-formed Ashliurst Defence Rifle Club held its official opening shoot on Labour Day. The weather left little to bo desired, although the wind was at times a little tricky. There was a good attendance of members, visitors and friends, including representatives of the Pohangina, Cheltenham and Feilding Clubs. The was commenced at 10 a.m., when the's-resident (Mr. W. G. Romley) fired the opening shot. Shooting at the 200 yards was with the open sights and at the 300 yards the competitors were allowed to use the aperture sights. „„„ , On the completion of the 200 yards shoot a brief halt was made for lunch, after which the president thanked the visitors, including the ladies, for their attendance, and hoped that all were enjoying themselves. Before commencing the 300 yards shoot yir. Romley thanked the patron (Mr. A. \V. Akers) for allowing tlio club to use a portion of his property as a rifle range. Mr. Akers, in reply, congratulated the members on the formation of the club and the work on-the range, and wished the club a successful future, and added that it gave him great pleasure to see so many young shots on the range. Mr. Akers then commenced to show that he had not lost all his old-time skill, by returning the creditable total of 28 off the rifle at 300 yards. The best scores off the rifle at *OO yards were made by R. A. Jones and C. Bailey, each rifleman returning the good score of 32 out of a possible 35. At the 300 yards K. Romley and R. A .Jones returned the best cards with 31 each K. A. Jones returned the best aggregate olt the rifle, scoring 63. The shooting at each range was seven shots and two optional sighters. Brize winners a.t the 200 yards range were: J. Searle (Ashliurst), C. Bailey (Pohangina), F. Short (Pohangina). JFox, H. Bristow, D. Mcßae, J. Kingdom, C Turner, J. McDonell, each of whom reached the limit of 31 with handicaps. Other 34’s were O. Dunham and S. ±ior-s nail, both of Ashliurst Club. Prize-winners at the 300yds. were:—J. Searle (Ashliurst), i.
