GLEN OEOUA A most enjoyable afternoon was spent in tho Glon Oroua hall when the October meeting of the Women’s Institute was held. Tho singing of the "Odo to Friendship" opened tho meeting. Mrs Boswell presided. One new member was enrolled and a welcome was extended to all visitors. Mrs Boswell explained the arrangements made for members to attend the half-yearly meeting at Pahiatua. Mrs Jeffs read an account of tho group meeting hold last week at Rongotca. Sho also asked for names of members willing to assist with tho pageant to bo held in Palmerston North in January, 1931. Mr F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, gave a very interesting talk on gardening, at tho close of which a vote of thanks was passed. The competition, “Something new from something old," proved very popular, and thero was a splendid array of garments to bo judged by popular vote. The results wore: Mrs Sexton 1, Miss Robinson 2, Mrs Hunt 3. A collection of pennies wa3 mado for the Governor-General’s fund. Mr Nathan drew tho winning ticket for tho basket competition, tho successful entrant being Mrs Sexton 1, with Mrs Pearce (Feilding) 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Angus and Misses Fanner and Wright. Next month’s competitions are for the best article from 2oz wool (knitted or crochet) and a sponge cake, any filling. Tho singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. LONGBUBN On Wednesday afternoon there was a good attendance presided over by Mrs Lemberg at the meeting of the Longburn Women’s Institute. Mrs Lemberg welcomed Mrs Tremaine (of Bainesse), who gave many helpful hints on tho making of soft toys. Mrs Tremaine brought some wonderful toys ready made to show, one of which she very kindly presented to tho institute for competition. At the close of her talk Audrey Holland presented Mrs Tremaine with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The points competition for the best article made from pine cones was won. by Mrs Brockliss, with Mrs Fletcher second and Mesdames Holland, Foss and V. Zurcher, equal, third. Tho roll call for the best cure for a "flit of the blues” causod much merriment, Mrs Tremaine awarding tho prizo to Mrs Sanson, whose cure was "Visit a cheerful friend." Further arrangements were made for tho group meeting, which is to be held in Longbum on November 8. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Foss and Brocklis3 and Miss M. Bell. Mrs Rowland thanked Mrs Tremaine on behalf of members for her interesting demonstration, and Mrs Grace proposed a hearty vote of thanks to tho hostesses. The singing of the National Anthem brought, the afternoon to a , close.
