Davis Cup Players “Treated Like Children” ELLSWORTH VINES’ CRITICISM VANCOUVER, Sept. 22. In a statement published at Newport, Rhode Island, on Friday, given here on the understanding that it would be held until the end of his 1933 campaign, which followed his defeat by Jack Tidball at Los Angeles, H. Ellsworth Vines states: —"We were not good enough in Paris to beat the English Davis Cup players, but there were several factors in the preparation of tho team militating against success. For one thing, we were treated like babies. After the first act one night in a Paris theatre we were bundled out. to our hotel during a sizzling heat wave and were unable to sleep. The air of super-seriousness that marked all our actions was depressing. Lott, Allison, van Ryn, and myself had been through cup play previously, and did not have to be convinced of its seriousness. There were also phases of training that were not in the best interests of the team. The best plan for the United States to follow in 1934 is to select a man with a youthful viewpoint and possessing international experience as a background to direct the team.”

Henri Cochet made his professional debut in the Franco-American match before a small crowd at the Roland Garros Stadium, where he defeated Bruce Barnes, G —4, 5 —7, G —o, O—G,0 —G, G—3. Ho displayed something of his Davis Cup form, though ho was listless and ragged in the latter stages of the game. W. T. Tilden bent Plaa, 6—3, G—3, 6—2.
