AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

TO-NIGHT AT OPERA HOUSI

There has been quite a good response from wrestlers in tho district to compete in the amateur championships tonight. at the Opera House. A scarcity of real heavyweights is noticeable, and it. may so turn out that, there is no competition in. this class, in which case no award will bo given; but it does not preclude the possibility of a trip to the New Zealand championships, if a capable man in any class not contested should have entered. It only means that, no medal or cup will bo awarded to any competitor lor a walkover win. Pour finals only of the best of the classes contested to-night will be fought out to-morrow night as preliminaries to the Kumberg-Patter-son match, which is creating almost as much interest as the Walker-PatlcTson bout. Patterson apparently goes as near as ho can. to tho knuckle, and has been disqualified frequently when in a commanding position, but with an experienced refereo like Mr Alex Anderson in the ring, ho will not be allowed to go to extremes as he apparently did at Whangarei last Wednesday, when the polico intervened to assist the referee in pulling the big Irish-Ameri-can away from Eumberg, whom he had in a barred hold. Referee Anderson is well able to look after his men and control the roughest of bouts. Tho box plans for to-morrow night may be seen at the Gontrai Booking Office.
