How They Ran

Two Starters in Hurdles. Henry of Navarro and Knollmere were tho only starters in the Hurdles, the former being a slightly better favourite in a very small pool. Knollmerc went to the front following the start and Henry of Navarro was compelled 1 o lump his weight from the outset. Bowden kept him handy to tho leader and when'Dulieu gave Knollmere a breather five furlongs from home, Henry of Navarre jumped into the lead. It wa3 only on sufferance, however, for Knollmere headed him again and went on to win easily by five lengths. Southern Winner.

Tho public went for Copyist, Sir Ghas. Clifford’s gelding, Campanero and Aube, in the maiden event, for which 14 starters paraded. When the field had settled down the order was Copyist, from Palm Queen, Rust, Campanero, Platter, Prince Umberto ana Widden. Crossing the top Copyist ana Palm Queen were in the van, closely attended by Rust and Platter, and at .the entrance to the straight Copyist, Palm Queen and Campanero were almost in line, ahead of Rust, Platter and Hu Vidette. Copyist was in charge at the bottom of the straight and he had to bo shaken up to hold off chalJenges by Palm Queen and Rust. He was doing it nicely at the finish, however, to scoro by a couple of lengths from Rust, and Palm Queen was over two lengths further back, followed by Campanero, Platter, Prince Umberto and En Vidette. Aube was last. Campanero dwelt a bit at the start and had grdund to make up in the early stages of the race.

Pango Pays a Price. Cherry King, Headmistress and D’Artagnan were sorted out as the likely ones in the Putiki Hack, Pango, the winner, and Ytkan, being at good odds. Ythan led out of the straight the first time followed by D’Artagnan, Arastar, Thrasher, Plateau,- Heather Glow and Beryl Latour in that order. Arastar soon raced to the front and he was clear of the others going down the back stretch. Ythan was in second place, attended by D ’Artagnan, Thrasher and Heather Glow. Running to the far- turn Headmistress moved up to Ythan but Pango was still well back. Crossing the top Ythan was three lengths away from Arastar, and D’Artagnan and Headmistress were out’side him. D’Artagnan dropped out of the picture and Arastar led into the straight from Ythan, Headmistress, Thrasher, Plateau, Heather Glow and Pango. In a good finish Ythan held the lead until just on the post where Pango came up on the outer to get tho verdict by a head. Headmistress was haif a neck away from Ythau and Plateau close up fourth followed by Thrasher, Cherry King, Heather Glow and Beryl Latour. D’Artagnan was last.

An inquiry was held after the race and R. McTavish was suspended for three months for his handling of the favourite, Cherry King. Speedmint Wins Decisively. Copper ICing was withdrawn from the Marangai Handicap, and Speedmint was at a short price on both machines. Little Doubt was first to break the line and He led" past'the stands from Spoeumint, Joic dc Yal, Count Palatine, Chopin, Gibraltor and Brambletorn. Going round the turn Brambietorn went round the field and he followed Little Doubt into the *ack, ahead or Joic do Val and Speedmint. There was little alteration oyer the next half mile and the field was bunched at the far turn. Racing for the straight, Little Doubt and Brambletorn were together iu front, with Speedmint and Joie dc Val together next and Chopin. Count Palatine was next. Gibraltor was dropping back. Speedmint’s rider lost his whip at the bottom of the straight but she worked her way to the front and went on to win nicely by a length from Chopin who finished well to beat Brambletorn for second money, the margin between them being threequarters of a length. Little Doubt was right up fourth and the next to finish were Count Palatine and Joic de Val.

Porotiti All The Way. Foreign Queen was favourite for the Sealield Handicap, Spiral and Porotiti being next in the betting order. When the tapes went up Porotiti was first to show oqt from Fiji, Spiral, Fqreign Queen, King’s Knave, Midian nna Snowball. There was little . alteration in tho order as they raced along t.<e back and going across the top Porotiti was four lengths ahead of Spiral, Fiji and. Foreign Queen in line. King’s Knave was next followed by Midian. Porotiti was well clear at the home turn and he led into the straight ?rom

Spiral, Midian and King’s Knave, Foreign Queen and Fiji having dropped out of the picture. Nothing had a chance of catching tho leader though Midian made a bid for it and was only two lengths away at the finishing line. King’s Knave was two lengths further back third and Spiral was fourth followed by Snowball, Fiji and Great Emblem.

Attractive Performance by Passion Fruit.

Passion Fruit was a red-hot favourite for the Durie Hack and he carried his backers through, winning easily after being well placed all the way. He was first to break the line and he led along the back followed by Quietly, Acceptable, No Doubt, King Thomond, Hnulbowline, Tavern Knight and Diagano in that order. Acceptable ran up to Passion Pruit at the far turn and they led across tho top from Quietly, Haulbowline, Tavern Knight and King Thomond. At tho entrance to the straight the leaders were two lengths ahead of Quietly, with Tavern Knight, King Thomond, Haulbowline and Catalogue next. Once in line for the judge, Passion Fruit drew out, followed by King Thomond, who got through on the rails, and Passion Fruit was not troubled to win by a length and a half, Quietly being three lengths away from King Thomond. Acceptable was fourth and next were Haulbowline, Tavern Knight, Boon, Diagano and Catalogue.

Close Finish in the Sprint. There was a blanket finish in the sprint and heads separated tho placed horses, Royal Hunting finishing gamely to beat off Red Manfred and Curie, the favourie. ' Slippery was first away followed by Royal Hunting, Merry Way, The Tiger, Red Manfred, Curie, Sir Pombal and Impasto. Royal Huffting was in charge before they had gone far and he led across the top followed by Slippery, Impasto, Red Manfred, The Tiger, Curio and View Halloo. They were travelling and Slippery, Red Manfred and Curie followed Royal Hunting into the straight. A great finish resulted. Royal Hunting was a couple of lengths to the good at the bottom of the running, but Curio and then Red Manfred challenged. Curie looked likely momentarily and Red Manfred had a go and the three flashed past tho judge almost in line, Royal Hunting hanging on well to get the verdict. View Halloo was four lengths back fourth and the next to finish were Slippery, The Tiger, Midinette, Impasto and Aga Ivhan.
