Boy Scout Activities in Feilding

ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING. Quite the most enthusiastic meeting of supporters of the Boy Scout movement in Beil ding since the movement was resuscitated some ten years ago wa,s held in the Manchester Street School last night, when the retiring citizens’ committee gave an account o-f its stewardship. Mr AV. E. Carthew, chairman of the committee, presided over a particularly large gathering of citizens as well as a record muster of scouts and cubs. Those present included Miss Wilson, of Bulls, Akela leader.

Xn moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr Carthew said that it was indeed pleasing to members of the committee to sec such a large attendance of parents and friends of the movement. This displayed a very kindly interest in the Boy Scout activities, which the speaker assured the meeting were never more enthusiastic.

Supporting the chairman, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) said it was quite a joy to parents to see such a line gathering of scouts and cubs. He congratulated the organisation upon the support it was receiving and was happy to note the substantial progress made. The speaker was also pleased to note the presence of Miss Wilson, and extended her a most cordial welcome, recalling'the interest tho late Sir James Wilson manifested in Eeilding and its progress. Concluding, Mr Taylor congratulated Mr Carthew, tho committee and officers, for the report of the year’s activities.

The report was adopted with enthusiasm.

The retiring committee, with the addition of the Rev. E-, O. Blamires, vice Rev. F. Copeland, was unanimously re-elected. Mr H. C. Buist was reelected secretary, and Mr C. S. Jeffs re-elected treasurer. Mr 0. Bedis was elected hon. auditor.

The training reports dealing with the work of scouts and cubs, were read to the meeting and received with enthusiasm. Particular mention was made by Mr Buist to the work of Scoutmaster Street, to whom was due the success of the scout troop. There was no doubt, said Mr Buist, that the organisation owed a tremendous amount of its progress and success to Mr Street. (Applause.) Mr Buist also referred to the splendid work of the cubmiistresses ,who had been successful in creating rather wonderful enthusiasm among the cubs. Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick voiced the approval of tho gathering for the reports. “We are all very proud of having Scoutmaster Street in chargo of our scouts,” said the speaker, who went on to say that the spontaneous applause which punctuated the reading of tho reports was sufficient indication of the approval of parents. (Applause.)

The thanks of the meeting were accorded the Manchester Street School Committee for granting the use of the school quad to tho scouts.

The scouts and cubs were then inspected by the chairman in company with Miss Wilson, who afterwards addressed tho gathering on the subject of experiences in the Homeland among the Boy Scouts. The boys later rendered a number of items, and the serving of supper concluded a most enthusiastic meeting.
