Feilding Amateur Sports Carnival Proposal

NOT FAVOURED BY CRICKETERS. At last evening's annual meeting of tho Feilding and District Cricket Association reference was made to tho recent meeting of representatives of sports bodies, called to consider proposals for launching a queon carnival, with the abject of raising funds. Mr E. H. Lange (president) said that ho attended the meeting to hear the views. At tlic outset he would remind all cricketers that they must not lose sight of the fact that the Borough Council had undertaken to find £250 towards the provision of a pavilion on Kowbai Park when the Cricket Association was able to provide a like amount. Thcro was no doubt that a pavilion was urgently desired, but it was a matter of funds. As to the meeting, views wore divided. It was suggested that the time was inopportune to launch a carnival. There ivas considerable distress about, and it was not : thought advisable to make an appeal for funds to assist sports bodies when there existed other unsatisfied calls. Further, it was stated that bowling clubs were more or less private institutions —-privato in the sense that their grounds were not open to tho public to the same extent as the grounds used by Rugby players, cricketers, and bockey players. He would like to know what the meeting felt towards the proposal. Air G. J. Fitzpatrick was not in favour of the idea because of tho existing conditions. He stated that football in* ! terests derived considerable revenue j each year, and were not really in need of funds. Tho bowding clubs, perhaps, needed funds, but he could not see that they had a claim on public subscriptions to help them. As for cricket and hockey, they had practically no genoral revenue and relied largely on players to keep the games going. Tho speaker named several institutions which, he suggested, had a greater call upon public support than sports clubs. Members generally did not favour the proposal, and a motion, proposed by the chairman, expressing the view that the timo was inopportune to launch a carnival, was carried without opposition.

| Mr Lange then intimated that he had in view proposals which would mature later, for furthering the matter of providing Eowhai Park with a pavilion.
