Vessel Not In Distress

The announcement made over the air from Wellington on Wednesday night to ihe effect that it was believed that the in.v. Huanui was in distress off Kapiti Island, was an erroneous one. The Huanui, which left Coilingwood during the week-end with a cargo of coal for Foxlon arrived off Manawatu Heads early .on Monday morning. Owing to the heavy sea running, however, the vessel was unable 1.0 cross the bar and turned about and sought shelter at Ivapiti Island until such time as the weather moderated. The vessel took shelter under the lee of Kapiti Island and has been there ever since. The master of the vessel, Captain T C Thomsen, came ashore at ParaliViraumu on Wednesday and in communication with the local agents (Messrs G. Y. Fraser and Co.) regarding weather conditions, he intimated that the vessel would remain at anchor until conditions improved. It was stated that the report that the vessel had appeared to be in difficulties might have arisen from the manoeuvring of the Huanui or some other vessel off Paraparaumu. Schooners were not common nowadays and their manoeuvring' could easily mislead anyone unaccustomed to the handling of such vessels into the t)6li©f thcit tn© uOcit wd.s in distress. . . Further advice received yesteTSay morning by the local agents from the master of the Huanui intimated that the vessel was still at the anchorage at the Island and was in no difficulty whatever.
