’ WANGANUI RACES HEAVY RAIN CAUSES POSTPONEMENT OF OPENING DAY Tho Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring mooting was to have opened yesterday, but heavy rain was falling early in the morning and tho officials decided to postpono tho meeting until to-day (Friday). It is somo 40 years since rain caused tho postponement of races in Wanganui. Bramblctorn will bo Tidden by P. Atkins in tho Marangai Handicap. The postponed date for the holding of tho Napier Park Racing Club’s spring fixture lias not been finally fixed, but it is hoped tlic date applied for, Saturday, November 4, will be approved by tho Dates Committee.

TRACK WILL BE HEAVY The course is bound to bo heavy for the first day of the Wanganui meeting, and the going will be in favour of the mudlarks. Among the proved mudlarks arc Speedmint and Curie. POSTHUMOUS HONOURS Sires in last season’s winning list in Australia include many that are dead. It is the same in Now Zealand, their number including Lucullus, Solferino, Absurd, Archiestown, Catmint, Thurnham, Some Boy, Tonbridge, Polydamon, All Red, Quin Abbey, Marble Arch. Eiysian, Grand Knight, Psychology, Polazcl, Romeo, Hymestra and Gay Shield. MAY NOT RACE AGAIN The Ascot Gold Cup winner, Foxhunter, who was an 11 to 4 on favourite for the Goodwood Cup, beat only one of the five runners, and was so lame tho following day that it was considered improbable he would race again. Prior to the Goodwood Cup, tho intention was that ho should, bo raced next season, with the idea of again winning tho Ascot Cup. Sans Peine, who won tho Goodwood Cup, was merely started to make the pace for Foxhuntor, both being owned by Mr Edward Esmond, and that was why his price was 20 to 1.

EXTENDING OPERATIONS The Age Khan breeds burses in Ireland and Franco, and, at latest he had leased a portion of tho Egerton Stud at Newmarket (Eng.). Two of his well-performed horses, Dastur and Firdaussi, arc to stand there next season. Although the Aga Khan has been prominent in the winning list in England for many years, it would be safe to bet that his return from racing and breeding has not approached his expenditure. PLATING OF RUNNERS It was recently reported in England that the stewards of the English Jockey Club were considering the appointment of an official inspector to examine tho shoes of runners before each race. A member of tho jockey club stated that tho report was incorrect. The quesiton of the plating of racehorses was first brought before the Jockey Club at a meeting on June 12. Lord Rosebery proposed that when a horse was declared as a runner to the clerk of the course, his trainer should declare at the same timo whether he was plated or not. In bringing forward his suggestion, Lord Rosebery stated that, while there might be cases in which it was impossible to plate a horse, the running of horses in heavy shoes gave opportunity for sharp practice. After discussion, in which the necessity for somo rule to deal with the matter was generally agreed to, tho stewards decided to bring forward a rule at another mooting which it was thought would bettor moot tho situation. The matter was again brought before the club at a mooting on June 28. and the stewards then stated that they were not satisfied that the suggested amendment. to Lord Rosebery’s proposal was tho best way of dealing with the question, and accordingly discussion was further postponed.
