Uniform Stop-banks to Be Built on Mangaone

COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME POR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. At a recent meeting of t-kc Manawatu Drainage Board arrangements were made, for extensive improvements to the banks of the lower Mnngaone stream, with, the object of facilitating unemployment relief. Definite arrangements -have now been made for the inauguration of the work on Monday, but on an even more comprehensive scheme than was at first anticipated. The work will entail a total of 13 miles of stopbanking on the stream. It appears that a few years ago a complete survey of the stream was made by the City Council engineer, who prepared plans for stop-banking the stream over its entire length. After the recent meeting of tho Drainage Board, these plans were made available by the engineer, and will now bo utilised in the unemployment scheme. A lot of good work has already been done on the stream, but many of the stop-banks are decidedly uneven, and the high and low portions will now be reduced to a uniform level, while cleaning of the course will also be attended to wherever necessary. The work will be under tho general supervision of the city engineer, who is thoroughly conversant with the nature of the work to be carried out. Tho stop-banking will bo dono from Ifoxton line to .Setter J s line, a total distanco of CJ miles, which will mean the erection of double that length of banks. ' This stop, which was decided on at a recent meeting between Mr. AV. 11. Cadwalladcr, certifying officer for the district, Mr. J. R. Hughes, city engineer, and representatives of the Drainage Board, is certainly a forward one, as it will be extremely beneficial to owners of all adjoining property, while its worthiness as a means for occupying a largo number of men is indisputable. At least 20 men will be posted to the work next week in addition to those already engaged by the board, who will bo retained. It is expected that the number may be increased to 100 as the work progresses.
