Motoring in the Manawatu
MONTHLY MEETING OF AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION
The monthly committee meeting of the Manawatu Automobilo Association was held on Friday evening, when thoso present were Messrs N. H. Maekio (in the chair), H. E. Edmunds, R. T. Jaggard, E. It. B. Holben, E. S. Oliver. Apologies were received from Dr. E. C. Barnett and Messrs W. H. Brown, W. L. Fitzherbert and J. Hodgens. On the motion of the president, a vote of sympathy with Mr. Brown in his illness was carried, the hope being expressed that he would soon be well again.
A letter of appreciation for signposts erected at the Cuba street extension was received from the Takaro Progressive Association.
Mr. Edmunds referred to the dilapidated state of the railway danger and compulsory stop signs. It was decided to write to the Railway Department respectfully suggesting that they bo reconditioned.
The service officer roported for the month as follows: —
Mileage and roads: During road patrol work I noticed that the general condition of the roads in our district is very good with the exception of the Himatangi-Sanson stretch which is, as usual, very unsatisfactory. A noticeable improvement has been effected by the county concerned at Mount Stewart. Small yellow posts have been placed at intervals down the hill in order to indicate the edge of the road to motorists driving at night. Hotels: I accompanied Mr. Ringer, of the Auckland Association, during his annual inspection of tho hotels in our district. It is very satisfactory to report that the general good condition is being maintained and the majority of proprietors appear anxious to keop up the standard.
Bigns: All “appointed hotel” signs have been taken down for reconditioning, but will bo re-erected within a few days. A number of other signs have been cleaned, straightened and generally reconditioned. All signs allocaeca for this year have been erected. School lectures: Safety First lectures have been delivered to the children intending various schools in our district. These appear to be greatly appreciated. Radio talks: Addresses on tho motor regulations and other matters of interest to motorists are being continued weekly. The report was adopted. ‘ Arising out of the service officer’s report, it was decided to write to the engineer of tho Manawatu County suggesting that the discs on the posts at Mount Stewart would be more effective if painted whito and commending this suggestion for his attention.
